Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff has won reelection in Georgia, according to the Associated Press, which called the race at 7:55 p.m. EST Tuesday.

The AP reported that Ossoff defeated Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Collins. The result keeps the seat in Democratic hands as the national contest for control of the Senate continues.

Ossoff was the only Democratic senator seeking reelection this year in a state President Donald Trump carried in 2024, according to AP. Holding Georgia was an important part of Democrats’ effort to win a Senate majority. The Georgia result alone does not settle which party will control the chamber.

For Augusta-area voters, the call answers one statewide question on a ballot that also includes the governor’s race, the U.S. House and county-level contests. The Senate outcome does not determine those separate races.

The count is still underway

The AP call is the news organization’s determination of the winner. Certification is a separate responsibility of election officials. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission explains that election-night returns remain unofficial while officials complete the counting, reconciliation and certification process.

Readers can follow the count through the Georgia Secretary of State’s official results gateway. An official government website may display unofficial returns before certification.
